Who were they?

This is the bird's eye view of the ruins of Mycenae. It sat upon the acropolis, a tall hill, and looked out over the valleys of Greece. It could be seen from a distance at its height.

 This is the Lion's Gate entrance to Mycenae. The threshold stands at 10x10ft and enters a long corridor of the Cyclopean walls.
